We absolutely love seeing parents cheer on their kids as they dive into learning how to surf!
To help your child build confidence and settle in, we recommend giving them the first two or three days to soak up camp on their own. When parents are close by, kids might get distracted or feel like it’s okay to leave camp boundaries, which can be tricky for our safety team. If you’d like to stay and enjoy the beach, just have a quick chat with our staff so we can keep things running smoothly. And don’t worry, you’ll have a front-row seat to their progress in the surf contest, typically held Friday mornings, where you can watch your young surfers shine!
That Awkward First Day Is Kind of the Whole Point
Every kid steps onto the beach that first day with a mix of excitement and nerves. Some kids sprint for the waves, while others hang back, taking it all in and observing their surroundings. Both approaches are perfectly normal.
The first two to three days when a parent is not nearby are when the magic often happens. Kids figure out how to introduce themselves. They start to make friends and ask their instructor the questions they might not ask if mom or dad were standing close by. Sometimes they lose their balance and topple right off the board, but instead of feeling self-conscious, they just laugh, brush off the sand, and give it another try. Without anyone watching too closely, falling becomes just another part of the adventure and feels less awkward.
It’s not only about that big moment when they finally stand up and ride a wave, though that’s a huge win. It’s also about kids following directions, giving new challenges a shot, and realizing they can handle things on their own. When they have a little freedom, they often surprise themselves with what they can do.
At Aqua Surf School, we have been doing this for over 20 years, and we see this happen every summer. When kids get a few days to find their own way, they come home with confidence and happiness that’s hard to put into words.
Why the Safety Piece Actually Matters More Than You’d Think
It’s easy to forget how lively and ever-changing the beach can be. The waves are always moving, and kids move fast. Our Aqua Surf team is trained to watch every camper closely. Our student-to-instructor ratios are low, and staff members are certified in CPR and First Aid to keep the kids safe.
When a camper spots a familiar face down the beach, no matter how well they know the rules, seeing their parent makes them want to run over. So, without thinking, they can start coming toward you and leave the safe camp area behind. It’s not that they’re ignoring the rules; they just want to be close to the person they love. So they start moving toward you without thinking about the fact that they’ve just left the supervised area.
That moment, a child stepping outside camp boundaries, even briefly, is what worries our surf camp staff the most. It’s not because we’re too strict, but because the ocean can change quickly and isn’t always safe. The whole safety system that Aqua Surf has built depends on everyone knowing exactly where every camper is, every single moment.
So if you do want to hang around the beach, which is totally understandable, just let our staff know you’re there. Telling us helps everything run safely and smoothly, and it means no one has to worry about kids running off to find their parents.
Aloha Friday Is Genuinely Worth Showing Up For
Here’s something you might want to put on your calendar: Every Friday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, Aqua Surf has a special self-surf mastery contest, and parents are wholeheartedly welcomed and encouraged to cheer for their kids.
This contest is different from most. It’s not about beating other kids. It’s all about how much each camper has learned and grown since Monday. Kids and teens get to show what they worked on during the week and how they’ve improved in the water. The real challenge is to be better than their previous selves, not to be better than anyone else.
This makes the contest feel fun and supportive. There’s no stress to be the best, just the real joy of seeing personal progress. Watching your child stand up on a surfboard and feel proud in front of others is a moment you won’t forget.
At Aqua Surf, we give away surfboards, hats, trophies, and other prizes during these contests. But the look on a kid’s face when their growth gets recognized in front of their parents? That’s the part that no prize can compare to.
The Bigger Picture of What’s Happening Out There
When you watch from the sand on Friday, you’re seeing more than just surfing. You’re seeing the result of a week in a program built with care. From our strong student-to-instructor ratios in Southern California to the way staff are trained to be positive role models who really care about the kids.
Aqua Surf goes beyond teaching surf skills. We teach kids to respect the ocean, help them practice good communication, and create a space where everyone is welcome. Kids from all backgrounds, local families, and visitors from all over come together, sharing the waves and making new friends that sometimes last long after summer is over.
Surf camps have historically run at locations including Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Will Rogers State Beach. However, surf camp locations may vary by season and conditions.
The sense of community is a big reason families return year after year. Your child is not just learning to surf, they’re joining something special.
So, Can You Hang Out?
Yes, with a bit of intention behind it. For the first few days, let your child try things on their own. If you’re staying close by, let the staff know you’re around. Then, on Friday, show up and be their biggest fan. Cheer loudly, take all the photos, and celebrate every moment.
That Friday morning, seeing your child catch a wave they couldn’t at the start of the week, is what makes it all worth it.
