Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need prior surfing experience?
No. We welcome all levels. If it’s your first time ever standing on a board, we’ll take it step by step.

What if I’m not a strong swimmer?
All activities take place in waist-to-chest-deep water. We won’t ask anyone to go beyond what feels right and safe.

What if I’m nervous about getting in the water?
No worries—your “surf sisters” will be right by your side every step of the way. We move at your pace, whether that means easing in slowly, taking breaks on the board, or just soaking up the ocean energy from the shore until you’re ready. You’re never alone out there.

Find Your Flow: Surf, Sisterhood, and Self-Care

Women’s Wellness Surf Days invite you to experience sanctuary by the sea—whether you’re a first-timer ready to find your stoke, a mother craving a little space to exhale, or someone navigating an experience of trauma or grief, this 3-hour session is intended for anyone looking to find healing in the waves. Through surf therapy, movement, and shared intention, we gather in sisterhood to reconnect with our bodies, our stories, and the wisdom of the waves. We’ll start with an hour of mindful intention and movement to ground and awaken the body, then dive into an hour of expression in the ocean (boogie boarding or surfing), and finish with an hour of restorative yoga and reflection on the sand, leaving you feeling restored, connected, and renewed.

“I feel like almost every woman that I’ve watched become a surfer takes a new control of what they want their life to look like, in a way that they weren’t doing before. I think the world will be a better place when more women get to do that.”

-Renee Labbe

Mary Frandson, Certified Surf Therapy Facilitator

As a certified surf therapy facilitator through The Groundswell Institute, my mission is to create experiences where people can tap into the ocean’s healing energy—calling on their courage, letting go of what no longer serves them, reconnecting with their true selves, and stepping into their power to live more authentically. As a waterwoman and surfer, I’m here to share the stoke and soul-spark of waves. Beyond my work in the ocean and Blue Mind spaces, I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the New School in New York City. I’ve taught English at St. Thomas University, served as an Editor for ESPN, and now write and edit for Amplitude Magazine. My life’s work blends storytelling, wellness, a deep, abiding love for Mother Ocean, and making meaningful contributions to inclusive surf communities.
